Uche Ignites Comfortable Crystal Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever European adventure, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting at a rapid pace. Without star players like forward Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club departed Dublin with a commanding result that all but secures them a place in the Conference League playoffs.
A further victory in their upcoming fixture against Finland's KuPS ought to be enough to seal straight entry to the knockout stages, particularly following a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Moment
This match offered a platform for several Palace's fringe talent to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning since arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a clinical goal. Forward Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne side that had finished their league season proved no match against a largely rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were further weakened by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are out with leg injuries.
Control Established from the Outset
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, let Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Youngster Adam Wharton came close minutes later, driving a powerful effort over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after racing into the box, but the referee waved away the appeals.
Ex-Arsenal man did not have wait long to find his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's effort had hit the post.
Shelbourne were hanging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of agricultural challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse almost scoring with his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also blazed a glaring chance, indicating there is still room for development in his game.
The only worry for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to earn his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise perfect evening for the traveling side.
