This New Horror Film Can Be Streamed, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.

Consider this a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your partner and view Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. On the surface, it could look like conventional body horror, but beneath Together resides a deep meditation about our choices in loving our partners.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The narrative starts when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A familiar plot device, of course, but that’s primarily where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and wraps them up in a consistently growing aura of dread.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the idea of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes one partner or the other the definite antagonist.

The couple confront the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their future together.

Thematic Depth

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
