The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
