A bettor made nearly half a million dollars by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from confidential information of the event.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, an online prediction market, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the month's conclusion increased in the time leading up to Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

One account, which became a member in December and made four bets, all on Venezuela, earned over $436K from a initial bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that participants put the odds of the president's removal at just under 7% in the late afternoon of the prior Friday.

But these probabilities had increased to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the morning of Saturday, indicating a rapid movement in positions right before the official statement was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a trade based on non-public details," stated Dennis Kelleher.

Several of other traders also profited tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Regulatory Scrutiny Emerges

Politicians are growing concerned.

A new rule presented on recently would prevent government employees from placing bets on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in recent years, with users able to bet on everything from elections to current affairs.

The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the forecasting arena.

A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
